The 2012 IHMA Partners’ Programme will take you on journey that highlights the landscape, history and heritage of Cork and its surrounds with some of Ireland’s most popular and scenic attractions. All tours will depart and return to the Clarion Hotel, Cork City and include the evening social activities of the 2012 IHMA Congress.
Monday 14th May 2012: Cork Countryside & Blarney Village Tour including Blarney Castle (9.30–15.30)
We will enjoy a panoramic drive through Cork City before touring through Cork’s countryside to arrive at Blarney Village. We will have lunch at leisure and time to explore this village steeped in history and
magical charm. Built nearly six hundred years ago, Blarney Castle is a world landmark and one of Ireland’s greatest treasures. The castle is situated in over a thousand acres of magnificent woodland complete with gardens, avenues, arboretums and waterways. The gardens will be in spring with carpets of bulbs and a fine collection of azaleas and rhododendrons.
For many of the visitors to Blarney, their first priority is to kiss the famous Blarney Stone high up on the Castle Tower. Tradition holds that those who kiss this legendary Stone will be endowed with the gift of
eloquence, or “the gift of the gab”, as the locals call it.
Evening: IHMA Welcome Reception at Cobh Heritage Centre City Hall Cork (18.00–20.00)
Tuesday 15th May 2012: Killarney (8.00–16.30)
We will travel towards Kerry and continue to Killarney to visit the Muckross House & Gardens.Muckross House, a restored 19th century manor house, is majestically situated on the shores of
Muckross Lake, amidst the beautiful scenery of Killarney National Park. This is Ireland’s oldest NationalPark and it includes the world famous Lakes of Killarney, as well as the mountains and woodlands that surround them. Between the months of April and July, Muckross Gardens are spectacularly adorned with other features including a Sunken Garden, a Rock Garden and a Stream Garden.
After a two course lunch and free time to discover Killarney, we will drive to Aghadoe Heights to view the Lakes of Killarney before returning to Cork City via Mallow: the largest town along the lovely
Blackwater Valley.
Evening: Exhibition Networking Drinks at the Exhibition Hall, City Hall Cork (17.30–19.30)
Wednesday 16th May 2012: Kinsale Tour with Charles Fort (9.00–15.00)
We will travel to the medieval town of Kinsale via the Lee Tunnel to visit Charles Fort. Charles Fort is one of the finest surviving examples of a 17th Century star-shaped fort and much of the construction begunin 1678 remains. We will continue to Kinsale town for a walking tour with a local guide. Kinsale town nestles between the hills and the shoreline, a maze of narrow streets, never far from the water and little changed in many hundreds of years. We will have lunch at leisure and time to explore one of the most picturesque, popular and fashionable resorts of the south-west coast of Ireland. Today Kinsale town is famous for its beautiful yachting, sea angling, dolphin and whale watching, art galleries and gourmet restaurants.
Evening: IHMA Official Congress Dinner, Clarion Hotel Cork City (19.00–Midnight)
Thursday 17th May 2012: Free day to explore Cork
Cork offers visitors the experience of countless pubs, restaurants, art galleries, museums, parks and historical sites. Step back in time by visiting St. Finbarres Cathedral, Shandon Church, Elizabeth Fort
and Cork Vision Centre before a refreshing break to sample the local produce at the English Market in the heart of the city. You may prefer to get active and enjoy the natural beauty of the nearby Fota
Wildlife Park and Gougane Barra Forest Park or simply explore the city’s charming boutiques. Friday, 18th May 2012: Technical Site Tour (9.00–14.30) Guided tour of the Port of Cork facilities and the Jameson Experience, Midleton, Cork
Friday 18th May 2012: Technical Site Tour of the Port of Cork facilities and the Jameson Experience, Midleton, Cork (9.00 – 14.30)
The day will commence with a guided tour of the Port of Cork: one of only two Irish ports which service the requirements of all six shipping modes: lift-on lift-off, roll-on roll-off, liquid bulk, dry bulk, break bulk and cruise. The Port’s facilities and operations are situated at four distinct locations in Cork’s natural deep water harbour and the tour will highlight the Port’s modern deepwater facilities.
Since 1990 the Port of Cork has invested €79 million in new and improved facilities. Highlights will include a visit to the National Maritime College of Ireland and the passenger and cargo handling terminals in Ringaskiddy before a trip around the harbour to Cobh. From Cobh, the journey will continue to the Old Distillery at Midleton. You will visit the Brew House and walk through the recreated distillery scene at the Old Cooperage to finish at the Jameson Bar. Complete the experience with the option of enjoying a full whiskey tasting before a relaxing lunch in the Malt House Restaurant. Look, listen and learn, not to mention have your palate tickled by the unmistakable mellow taste of the Irish whiskey and hospitality.
