Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As President of the IHMA, I’m delighted to be working alongside our hosts at the Port of London Authority to deliver our 11th biennial Congress in the international maritime setting of London.

There is no doubt that the safety, efficiency and security of global trade brings many challenges for today’s port industry and in particular for the harbour master. It is therefore very appropriate that as Congress is held in London, home of the International Maritime Organization, we should have an ambitious international agenda for our congress to address safe, efficient and secure maritime logistics, improve cooperation between ports and ships, develop best practice, and raise global standards for the safety, security and efficiency of ports.

The 2018 Congress with its theme ‘Ports – Essential for Safe, Efficient and Secure Global Trade’ will address a broad range of issues at the ship shore interface and will focus on the operational management and response that is of prime concern to the harbour master, VTS manager and all those with a managerial position in aspects of the control of marine operations within a port.

This is the first IHMA Congress to be held in London where the port has changed dramatically over the past 100 years and which is working hard to adapt and respond in order to keep commercial and leisure users safe, protect and enhance the environment and promote the use of the river for trade and travel. Many of our harbour masters around the globe are facing similar challenges and the Congress programme will outline local and international case studies on this central theme as well as delivering more traditional updates in marine operations, security, environment and technology.

If they are to deal effectively and efficiently with day to day port operations, harbour masters need to keep informed and up to date with innovative and evolving technology and all the new and exciting commercial products and services available to ports around the world. I would like to thank all of our industry supporters to date and I look forward to welcoming them to London in 2018. I would also like to invite new and emerging industry leaders to take advantage of the opportunity to be involved in the 2018 Congress and would encourage you to come along to develop new business contacts and share the best practice and expertise you have to offer.

As always, one of the most important and effective parts of Congress is the opportunity to meet up and network on a face to face basis. The city of London provides a stunning setting and the sheer volume of social activities and sights available for partners and for delegates pre or post congress is truly amazing.

It’s time to plan your involvement at the 2018 Congress! I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in London to experience all that this wonderful port city and the Congress have to offer.
